If I have a canon 350d Digital Rebel XT, can I use studio lights with it? If I will be...?
...limited, then in what way?
I was thinking specifically about this kit: Bowens Gemini 500/500
If this kit wont work, then can someone give me some suggestions on a good kit for around the $1500-$2000 range?
I can speak from experience on this one, because I shoot with the Digital Rebel XT myself with Studio equipment.
I currently use 2 Speedotron Brown Line lights with the Photek Softlighter II umbrellas, and I am very pleased with their consistent performance. But you can use whatever system you want. There are no limitations.
Here are a few things you must be aware of however with the Digital Rebel XT.
The XT does not come with a PC port, most sync cables that are distributed with light kits of any kind have a PC tip on them, as most professional cameras have that port. What you need to do is talk to whoever you are buying the kit from and ask them if they have a sync cord that has the appropriate connection for the power supply (Monoplug 1/4 for Bowens I believe) with a hotshoe tip on the other end. You will have to use a Monolight to Hotshoe sync cord in order to connect to your camera. Remsmber you DO NOT have a PC plug in.
If they do not have the cord you need do not worry, go to www.paramountcords.com and they will be able to build you a custom cord to meet your needs.
Also make sure that you get a low voltage adapter built in to the cord to be sure that you dont fry your cameras circuitry. Some manufacturers of light kits have already adjusted their products for digital cameras, but this is not always the case, so be safe on this one and just get the low voltage adapter built in to the cord.
Your second option, which is more convenient is a wireless Radio Slave kit and do away with all the cords, this is a more expensive solution but it is nice to have.
You can get a kit manufactured by Wein, go to http://www.adorama.com/WNSSRE.html to see what that is all about. They key here again is understanding your system and knowing what connection types you have. For example my Speedotron BrownLine Kit uses the H-prong to Hotshoe Sync Cord, if I were looking for a Wireless Slave kit I would find one that incorporated an H prong in the connections and not a monoplug. But I beleive that the Bowens system you are referring to uses MonoPlug which means the Wein SSR would work for you.
There are other wireless systems available on the market, but most others will run you double the cost of the Wein Systems. Wein is a very reputable manufaturer, used by many professionals.
