Basic Chem Lab Equipment And It's Uses
Today's modern basic chemistry lab equipment really hasn't changed much from the days of old. It is true that the tools used have advanced to an enormous degree with advances in technology and the design and production of new and informative data and information gathering scientific equipment. But for the basic chemist just beginning to learn this trade, many of the tools and pieces of chem lab equipment used by those who pioneered this branch of science are still used today. Here are some examples of basic chem lab equipment that would be needed for a beginner's chemistry lab.
A Mass Balance. The term balance is really referring to a scale use to measure out raw materials and reactants or samples. The science of chemistry is very closely tied to the measurement of mass because all elements have unique weights. This fact can be seen on a periodic table. A high precision balance will allow a chemist to weigh out samples, raw materials or reactants accurately and precisely and this leads to good data.
Glassware. The proper glassware is and has been and will always be a fundamental part of the basic chem lab setup. Glassware used in a chemistry lab would be labeled for measurement of liquids and solids as well as made from material that can withstand high temperatures. Examples of glassware found in a chemistry lab would be beakers, funnels, flat bottom boiling flasks, Erlenmeyer flasks, volumetric flasks, volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders and glass stirring rods just to name a few.
Porcelainware. For really high temperature reactions such as oxidation reactions, Porcelainware is required. Porcelainware has the ability to withstand heat that is extremely high. So high, in fact, that the chemicals present in it will burn and react with oxygen in the air. In the early days of chemistry, this is how chemists determined the weights of many elements by comparing their weights before and after burning.
Stands, Rings, Clamps and Bunsen Burners. As a means to hold glassware in place for use in the chemistry lab, iron stands, rings and clamps are necessary. Stands provide the framework used to support rings and clamps which in turn support the necessary glassware required to perform experiments in a chemistry lab. A simple example of this would be a stand holding a ring with a wire screen placed on top of it with a boiling flask sitting on top of that. Beneath that setup you may see a Bunsen Burner heating the chemicals in the boiling flask causing the chemicals inside to react and form the desired product.
Evaporating Dishes. Many chemistry labs use evaporating dishes to remove solvents from reacted products to purify and concentrate them. A solvent can be something as simple as water or in other cases it may be an organic solvent. Evaporating dishes remove the solvent and make the concentrated and newly formed raw mater available in it concentrated form for use.
