How Can I Video Great Detail on Very Small Objects? Is This Macro?

For some video enthusiasts, or even photo buffs, there are times when they want to video very small objects and still capture great detail in the picture. Is this possible, and if so, what needs to be done. Do I need any special equipment? Fortunately, the answer is that most video cameras these days, even on the cheaper end of the market, from a few hundred dollars, are able to capture objects in macro mode. Macro mode simply means that the camera is able to 'concentrate on relatively small objects, and still capture great detail.

A good example to illustrate this point would be the videoing of a small insect on a plant leaf. Again, I always recommend using a tripod, or in the absence of one, any object that the camera can be securely mounted on, to prevent shake, or movement. This is particularly important here, as the lens is focusing on a small object, so any movement, even a slight one, would be more easily 'highlighted'. Most cameras have a mode called macro that you can switch in, either with a switch on the side, or by selecting it in a menu option. As a side point, one way to compare the quality of a video camera in the store is to check the macro feature, and if it is able to produce a good result there, such as on a carpet thread (you need to use what you have available), you can be reasonably sure it will be an OK to very good performer for you.

The technology for the cameras to produce these results is embedded in the electronic circuitry, as well as the combination of the lens quality and CCD block, or charge coupled device. It plain terms, this is the area behind the lens, that actually converts the picture or outside image to an electronic signal for the tape, or disc in the unit. Once you are familiar with the process of obtaining a quality macro picture, you may well be tempted to try this out on other things,a and really look at the detail. I have found I have also used it to show greater detail on plants developing. This can take a little time and effort, in that it takes several weeks for some plants to mature. However, if you carefully mark out the place you had the camera, tripod, and so on, so it is always in the same place, you can then see a leaf develop over time, as an example. You are limited only by your imagination, as you can see from the above.
