NEW Digital Camera Site - Check It Out NOW! with even more helpful 'Photo Tip Info'
Have you tried a Studio Shoot with your Teen Model. If your not use to working in a photography studio with your digital SLR camera you may find this a little daunting at first. Let me explain how to set up your own Home Studio and start to produce professional studio pictures right away.
This is what you can do. Besides being the owner of a new digital camera, if you have a spare room in your house, you could use this as a studio and to prove the point and using only very basic second hand studio flash equipment I did just that for this exercise, so really there are no excuses for not giving it a try. As you are not working on a Bikini Beach location you will need some sort of studio flash to shoot your Teen Model Girl in your home studio.
What you should be looking for is a mains studio flash pack, with two outlets for two lights or two separate monoblock flash units, whare the power pack is built into the flash head, and the best place to start your search is in your pro photo store. I shot these Teen Studio Model images, using very basic second hand 20 year old units, which I picked up very cheaply more than fifteen years ago.
So try to find second hand used flash units to keep your initial costs down, but of course if you can afford it, you can always buy new portable units containing two lights, two umbrella attachments, two stands and a carrying case.
If you feel you could go for new ones, more the better, as not doubt they will be fitted with 'modeling lights' which will not only illuminate your model, but will give you a guideline so you can see the effect that your lighting will have.
If you are considering new units, then the Bowens Esprit mono block Studio Flash units, with modeling lights, (enabling you to see your lighting effects before you shoot), are one of the best on the market.
You will also need a separate white reflector, for your Teen Studio shoot, which can simply be large pieces of white art board, or purpose built folding reflectors from your photo store.
You can also buy, what is known as a 'Soft Box' or an 'Umbrella' attachment to fit to one of your flash lights, now your all ready to shoot your Young Teen Supermodel.
This is what you should do: Set up one of your lights with an 'Umbrella" or 'Soft Box' attachment to one side of your digital camera position at about 45 degree angle to your Teen Model Girl and a large white reflector on the other side.
You can use the other light bounced off the ceiling or a white or light coloured wall to help fill in the shadow side of your Model girl.
This is how it worked with my set up. I used one light with a 'Soft Box' attachment to one side of my digital SLR camera and the other light I used bounced off a reflector placed the other side of my SLR camera allowing the light to spill onto a white wall at the side and the ceiling above.
I used a 'Slave Unit' connected to the studio flash unit, which will fire the flash whenever my camera flash fires.
Connected to my camera is a Metz hammer head flash unit which has a small forward facing flash and a swivel head main top flash, which I POINTED UP TO THE CELING. When I shoot a picture this triggers the 'slave unit' attached to the studio flash units and will fire them at the same time.
You can see from this, the flash attached to my camera is a secondary flash as its pointed up to the ceiling it therefor has little or no effect on lighting the teen model, but is purely used to fire the 'Slave Unit' attached to the studio flash units.
