Lets Talk About; What Cameras to use for Fashion, Portrait and Glamour
on your Bikini Beach or in your Home Studio.
When I started out as a photographer over four decades ago and well before the invention of the Digital SLR Camera, we use to shoot catalogue fashion on location with a 10x8inch view camera and even though it was so long ago, the crowds that use to gather to watch us working, use to think it was funny even back then.
The reason for this was that the catalogue fashion people wanted the colour transparency Photo images to be the same size as on the catalogue page.
We use to shoot their work in the trendy areas on the streets of London's West End and in the swinging sixties London was the place to be.
To day we have seen many changes in digital camera technology and it's pretty easy for anyone to produce a sharp correctly exposed image without too much problems.
However to be able to call yourself a Pro Photographer you have to be able work with your digital camera set to manual mode and think nothing of it and only using features like auto focus and exposure settings to aid you.
If you were to ask me which type of camera I thought was the best for portrait and fashion work, I would answer the Medium Format camera, image size 6x6cm. It has a larger image size than the 35mm SLR camera and therefor gives you a better image quality.

Some Professional Photographers use Medium format cameras with digital backs that will attach to a variety of specially adapted cameras such as Hasselblad, Rollei, Mamiya. This is a very expensive piece of hardware to buy and if your just starting out, your would do best to avoid this kind of expense.
The good news is that the 35mm. Film SLR Camera or Digital SLR camera is more than suitable for most purposes, It's easier to to use, more versatile and the digital slr camera is the number one choice of the 'paparazzi' photographer. If you propose to shoot Model images on a Beach, a slr film or digital slr camera is the smart choice to make.
But despite all the advancement in digital camera equipment, the criteria stills remains the same and that is in the Studio, careful lighting and correct exposure and on Location careful attention to the available light, (the correct time of day to shoot), correct exposure and careful Fill-Flash. I will talk more about outdoor fill-flash later.
Which camera is best: Well the two most professionally used and also the most popular among the non-professional, are the "Cannon EOS slr Digital" and "Nikon slr Digital" cameras, also the slr film camera version is still a good option.
I prefer the Canon EOS cameras, as they are built like a computer and every other manufacturer seems to be playing 'catch up' to them. It still has the fastest auto focus system because it's built into every lens and not the camera body.
Having said all that, the Nikon Camera has been around for a long time and nearly four decades ago the Canon Camera didn't exist. In fact I used to use the Nikon F. 35mm SLR Camera in the early 70's and in those days there was nothing out there to match it for quality performance and optics and today, despite the fierce competition from all the camera manufacturers, the new generation of Nikon Cameras is still rated as one of the most widely used camera on the globe.
However, today the standard of just about all of the top end cameras are produced to such a high quality, making it difficult for the beginner to choose which Digital Camera is best for his needs, with cameras weighing in with more than adequate lens quality for a "Young Teen Model - Bikini Beach Shoot", for example.
If you already have a 35mm SLR film camera and your thinking of switching to digital, choose the same camera makers as in most cases your existing camera lenses are compatible with the new digital camera. This will save you a packet. Another point worth thinking about if you have a new digital camera, is to study the instruction manual, as there's gonna be some additional things you should get to know about.
But if you are a film camera owner, the following comment will give you heart. Did you know that if you shoot on 100ASA colour negative film stock and have your digital lab process the negs and transfer them to CD, you can most times get a very high quality image from your film camera and almost as good as if you had shot it on digital in the first place and that's a fact.
By the way, I still use my film camera as many pro Photographers do.
