If you were shooting a full time professional camera Model with your Digital SLR Camera, the experienced ones come up with the pose and all you do is direct it to suite the picture your taking, but sadly your more than lightly to be using an inexperienced young teen model and you may be totally stuck for an idea on how to make her look good.
Have you've ever photographed a model, only to find yourself scratching your head and racking your brains on how to get her to pose in front of your camera then perhaps the answer's here, now you can learn Posing Secrets and never be stuck for a pose again.
Simply, you need the experience to coax your inexperienced model into some kind of pleasant pose in front of your digital camera that not only looks pleasing but makes the outfit that she's wearing look good too.
However if your only shooting for your own portfolio or producing a set of photos for her own personal use, that's the good news, but your young Teen Model will still need a little encouragement from you to get the picture!
Another good thing is that your not trying to imitate a top Magazine Fashion Photographer and therefore you might just come up with a winning pose with your own ideas and digital camera.
I'm here to shorten the odds a little with a suggestion or two on a few basic poses that will help you to save the day.
This is not to say that you shouldn't explore other posing ideas that might pop into your head and I find often times that while working with an inexperienced young teen model, keeping in mind that she is in fact young and therefore can be allowed to "goof around" to some extent in your picture.... this is often where the magic happens and all you have to do is learn to see it by keeping your eyes open and grabbing your digital SLR camera to capture the Image. Then you can almost throw away your reference book on posing secrets.
Well, don't be that hasty, there's nothing like brushing up on your technique by reviewing 'posing ideas' that somebody else has written about, who might be more experienced than oneself and sometimes by just copying an idea, you add your own slant to it and can call it your own. Oops, now I've let the cat out of the bag...
Another way to give you image impact is to move in closer with your digital or film camera by filling the frame you will give your picture an edge. Also try tilting your camera, or try shooting from a low angle. Try to avoid shooting from head height unless there's a very good reason for doing so. This is especially so with young children, get down to their size and you pictures will come alive.
I often work lying on the ground and this will bring the viewers attention directly to the subject and more importantly if your shooting an assignment, will bring attention to the garments that your client may be advertising.
When posing your model, there is something that comes from within, it's simply the artistic side of you and you best believe that as it will guide you as you go. Stop, look, think of how the bikini model looks, dont just shoot a picture. Try to think of your model as a silhouette, or a shape. Check that your lighting is looking good, if your on location are you shooting at the correct time of day, that is two or three hours before sunset or two or three hours after sunrise. This is where the shadows are long and the light is soft. Try to work with the sun clipping the models body, using the correct fill flash with a ratio of 1 to 2.

The digital photos below show just a few poses that should help to get you going. Notice the first two images sitting or lying on the sand, the position of the legs and hands. Then the classic hands holding the hair, this always works well and don't forget the hands on hips and try to get your model to put her weight on one leg, if possible at the back. Then you have a climbing the rock picture where the photographer has tilted the camera to give a nice composition to the picture.
But have you noticed something that's common to all of these five images... and that is the models hands have something to do in every shot and to be honest I just quickly selected a few images that looked good at the time, not even noticing at first that the hands were correct, that is, they had been posed correctly and had something to do in every picture... As I said above, the artistic side of you, comes from within.
Lets make a short list of things you should look out for; a). Lighting, the position of the sun and the right time of day to shoot. In the studio, correctly position you 'main light' at an angle of 45 degrees to you subject, which will also require some fill in by either a reflector or flash. b). Some posing ideas, perhaps as suggested here and the eye to see the Image as a picture. c). And above all, apply the correct digital camera techniques. Learn to master you cameras functions...This is very important.
After working with an inexperienced young teen model, it is a great pleasure to shoot a full time professional model for an advertisement, fashion magazine or catalogue brochure. I then quickly catch up on all the great poses that I may have been missing out on and find myself eager to use with my next teen model shoot.
The images below, give you some basic camera poses that are guaranteed to make your photos look more professional and if I was you I would make a note of them and try to put them to good use.
But I'm reminded that to photograph a young model requires slightly different skills than her older counterpart and you would be wise to remember, a younger person is just that, she is younger, and should be seen to be having more fun. Once you grasped that idea, your on your way to success.
Check out these pictures (below), they all have something in common and that is, as far as the bikini model is concerned, it's perfectly normal for a young teen model girl to be doing just this on a 'Teen Bikini Beach' shoot.
