Standing Elk Western Novel Excerpt

Winter's snow still lay deep in the shielded areas of the Greenhorn Mountains as Jack attempted to traverse the lower reaches.  He felt like a greenhorn, too, about now.  How could he have been so blind as to ride into the trap Burl and his partner had set?  Jack knew he was lucky to be alive, though the throbbing pain in his shoulder from the bullet reminded him death was still stalking him.  His horse had not been so lucky.  With no rifle, bedroll or supplies the trail ahead looked bleak.  Burl would pay!

Jack knew Burl and his partner would be waiting at the nearby settlement, so he picked a deep arroyo, propped himself against one wall and tried to rest.  A coyote barked nearby as he dozed off.

In the early morning light Jack's hand quickly went to his pistol as pebbles rolled into the arroyo.  A boy of six or seven slid down after the pebbles.  He seemed at home here and would have continued on his way, but he noticed Jack watching him.  At first he hesitated but then cautiously approached Jack.  Standing a few feet from Jack he stared quizzically until a woman's voice called, "Josh!  Josh!"  Then after crawling back up out of the arroyo the way he had come the boy sprinted along the flat scrubland that surrounded his house.
