Radio Wireless

It Is DAB Radio Every Time For Me

Everyone seems to be going crazy about DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio these days. We want to take a look at some reasons why the sound quality is better on personal DAB radios than analogue radio. By the end we hope that you will have a better idea of the reasons that cause this improvement.

Normal radio (FM / AM) have always been subject to interference form local problems. Indoors, a computer or even a home appliance like a vacuum cleaner will affect the quality of the listening. Outdoors, obstacles between the sending station and receiver, such as tall buildings, trees, mountains and the like have always meant a reduction in the quality of the reception.

It is particularly bad though when listening in your car or on the move in other ways. You get a lot of crackling and hissing and the signal cuts out totally for short periods too often. This happens partly because the analogue signal is broken up and the path of each signal will arrive at the receiver at different intervals.

Digital radio gets rid of this problem because it has a computer in the receiver which calculates the signals coming in and gets rid of any distortions. Effectively it just takes the main signal and deletes the other signals which could cause the interference.

This really means that you can use DAB radio in any weather conditions. It does not matter if it is raining or snowing, the signal will be just as clear as it is in the middle of summer when the sun is shining brightly. It will also give the same quality signal if you are in the middle of town or out on the open road.

Another big advantage is that it makes better use of the range within the spectrum that can be broadcaster. DAB technology allows many more channels to be produced at the same time than does analogue. This means that there can be more broadcasters which gives the listener a much broader choice of stations.

Tuning in to a station is a lot easier as well. Long gone are the days of having to turn a dial to get a station only to find that you have to fine tune it again after not too long. Digital radios normally come with a lot of preset stations so you do not have to do anything. To get other stations all we have to do is scroll through a list of those available and pick which ones we want. We also know whether we are on the channel we want as it shows on the set, rather than just a number as in normal radios.

We hope that you now have a better idea of why we think that portable DAB radios are superior to analogue.
