soft boxes - what to look for when buying?
I would like to get my first softbox for my alienbee light, and i'm not really sure what to look for in a a softbox. I would be shooting 1-2 people for the most part and can't spend more than $100 but preferabbly would like to spend closer to $50 if possible. Do you have any suggestions for the brand or size I should be looking at? ALso, when you buy a softbox, does it come with everything I need to set it up and attach it to my light or do i need to buy other things with it to attach to my light? thank-you!!
First, you have to find one that will fit your lighting rig. I have a softbox for my travel kit that doesn't fit my home kit. I have a beauty dish that only fits my home kit. I'd check with alienbees first and see what they have available. Then you can be sure it will fit your light. If its really expensive, you may want to measure the opening and see if there is a comparable fit in one of the less expensive companies. I really prefer octagonal softboxes. I think they make better catchlights. The only thing I really don't like about shoot thru's is that they you can see the umbrella skeleton in the catchlights. You might want to give AB's parabolic light modifiers a try too. They look like more than your average umbrella. Best of Luck.
